Average price for a sushi place. We seated at the bench and we were ordering directly from the chef, who prepared our order in the very moment! Nice experience! Best ama-ebi tryed. We concluded with a very good plum sake. Almost nobody speaks English but we managed to order and to have some conversation with the staff.
Cheap sushi ~ The chef will order sushi according to your needs, like performances, miso soup like soy sauce, never eaten haha. A small portion of grilled eel but it's crispy and delicious
Sushi was pretty good, you are served directly by the chefs over the counter. They have an english menu and chef I had spoke quite a bit of english. Went at 5 PM on a weekday, crowd was very local. Really enjoyable.
Not very welcoming if you are not with Japanese... very surprising! Maybe I was not lucky but a customer try to help me get a table but the sushi master was very rude. I felt like he didn’t want to bother with a foreigner. Very different from usual Japanese kindness...
Average quality sushi at good price
Great place, good and not expensive sushi, staff is very friendly and you can also have a funny conversation with other customers. Highly recommended if you want to spend time with locals!
Obviously gaijins are not wanted
If you think that sushi and sashimi is what you eat in Europe, don’t go to Tomi; here you can have a fantastic and true experience of the sushi Kyoto style. Most of the customers are Japanese who goes there to have sushi at any time. Great place for true sushi expert and lovers of the Japanese culture.
Friends told us to come here. Mistake. Service was the worst we had in Japan and the sushi was fresh but average. Smokers everywhere. Skip it.
Read the reviews about them not serving foreigners but still tried it out. The first time we were welcomed and served without a problem by the sushi chef with black hair. The bald chef kept looking at us with disgust from far away though. The second time the bald guy gave us the X sign as soon as we walked in so I guess it all depends on when you go. Lots of locals there. The sushi is the same as you'd find in most places so you're not missing out on much if you get rejected. I think it'd be fun to stop by and see if they seat you or not.
Very rude to foreigners and overpriced. Don't recommend it at all.
Incredible sushi and a great atmosphere.
Amazing sushi, very well priced given the location and all cut in front of you and served to the countertop. English menu available but we went on a Tuesday evening and it was full of locals /Japanese. One of the loveliest meals I've had in Kyoto
Japanese only
I have enjoyed a lot the sushi here. I spent a nice dinner also thanks to the nice interaction with the other guests.
Rude and Not welcome non-Japanese.
It's a sushi restaurant that craftsmen hold and it's reasonably priced.
First experience in back alley sushi bar. Good vibes and crowded with locals. The presentation was coarse but the food tastes above expectation. There is English menu which helped. Would come back again!
Delicious and excellent customer service!
Great, melt in your mouth sushi for very good prices. Traditional tatami mat seating upstairs. Contrary to another review I read, they were very welcoming to us non-Japanese.
Expensive with mediocre taste
Walked 20 minutes to get there to be told they were closed while having a restaurant full of people and at 7pm. They have that they close at 10pm...unreal. We walked in and instead of hello we got we're closed!
Very friendly chefs and customers!
Very welcoming. Fresh fish. Good cold sake. Would definitely come back.
Decent sushi with quality ingredients. The toro sashimi was excellent. Unagi nigiri (eel sushi) was crunchy and soft at the same time. Other rolls and nigiri are quite good as well. The restaurant is next to the Nishiki market. It's on a small street so it's take a few look to find it. We didn't have a chair downstairs so we went upstairs and sit on the mat. Quite casual and comfortable. A tad expensive but the food is good so I can't complain too much. I would recommend this restaurant.
The price is very reasonable but it is reflected in the quality and portion of the fish given.
Empty tables. Would not take bookings. Turned us away at the door
Traditional style Japanese sushi restaurant. It seems that this restaurant was not welcoming non-Japanese speaker from old reviews but now there is English speak clear. They are getting non-Japanese friendly. I guess. Anyway, cuisines are reasonable and delicious. This restaurant is worth to challenge!!!
Nothing was special. The service was terrible. Since I have celiac disease, I brought gluten free soy sauce with me and asked not to use other kind of sauce that contains wheat, and one of the old customers who heard the conversation told me that I shouldn't have come to the restaurant if I have to ask that kind of thing. The chef heard that and noticed how it shocked me, but didn't do anything at all. Shame on both of them. The worst place I've ever tried. I definitely don't recommend this place.
Sushi was acceptable but nothing special. Price point was reasonable. Smokers make it hard to enjoy. Service was also quite slow. Additionally upstairs they have traditional Japanese seating which is great for some people but very uncomfortable for me.
Chef is so nice, and the sushi is good!
Bar-like sushi restaurant, we paid 6000 yen for two people, english menu available
Awesome local sushi in Kyoto with nice chief that takes time to explain different dishes. Sushis here are crazy good and price are affordable
Cheap attend the local people is delicious sushi. If you go to Kyoto about 10 years ago, you will definitely stop by.You can eat as many as you like.Starting from 40 yen. A large Toro is perfect.Stylish shop ❗ Kyoto valve does not change flurry
Excellent sushi, shame it was so busy that we couldn't sit at the bar, but this is always a difficulty at nice sushi restaurants
Good value for the money!
We wanted to try this sushi restaurant after suggestion or a friend. Despite there were several places free at the bar, they refused us. One hour later, we passed again in front of the restaurant and the free places were still free! We had then the strong and unpleasent feeling that they refused us because we aren't japanese...
It was really nice that there was "Tomi Sushi" in Kyoto.Kyoto sushi is expensive. One of the complaints living in Kyoto.Cheap and well-balanced taste,You can eat a lot, drink and drink 🍶.40 yen for messo 🤣🤣🤣🤣,At first glance, there is an atmosphere where it is hard to enter because it is only regular customers. But "OK 👌"Overseas people also come! (Nearly zero in corona),It's a long prohibition, so order more and more from the general and enjoy counter sushi in Kyoto.
This is the worst restaurant I have visited in JapanPoor greetingI didn't mean to say hello to the doorWhen we left, we did n’t even thank you for coming. We left silently by ourselvesThis is the first time in such an impolite restaurant2. There are two menusOne in English only without picturesThe other one has three packages with pictures, but the pictures are too blurryI don't know what to order3. Basic tea is not provided4. Poor taste, not worth a tryYusheng doesn't look too freshIf it is a tourist, I strongly recommend not to tryPatronized very completely and thought it was a waste of money and a meal
Similar to what others have posted, I'm pretty sure this place doesn't serve anyone who isn't Japanese. We walked into the bar around 7:30 and there were plenty of spots open and the man behind the bar was pretty adamant that he wasn't going to serve us. Would recommend that no one comes to this place if they discriminate.
PLEASE DONT COME HERE IF YOU ARE NOT JAPANESE/DONT KNOW JAPANESE. I am deeply disappointed at the service. At first, I felt that the Chef(with glasses) didn’t even want me to come in the restaurant when I couldn’t respond him by using Japanese. He treated Japanese like a client but treated non-japanese like a dog. I was very angry and ordered just only two dishes. When I went out, the Chef didn’t even say a thank you or goodbye. I actually know a little bit Japanese so I heard that he told other customers that he didn’t really want to serve foreigners. I love Japan so much and have been to Japan for many times. It’s the first time I’ve experienced such “service”. I will NEVER go to this restaurant again even I can speak fluent Japanese someday. I am so regret that I don’t read the comment at first on Google!!!!!
Not serving Chinese.
That is cheap and delicious.
Don't go here if you aren't Japanese. You will be laughed at and made to feel like a fool. They have no seats for you if you are not Japanese. Avoid!!
Cheap and delicious. Recommended
Sushi was nice
The reasonably priced sushi is fresh and delicious, starting from 30 yen (✧◝) ◜✧
The best traditional sushi experience in Kyoto! We left with a smile on our lips for the treatment and food. You cannot leave the city without going through this restaurant. The price and quality is unbeatable
Great place, we were the only westerners sitting there. Authentic experience
2017.12. A sushi house without great expectations. It was pretty good.
